Africa's game parks have lost well over half of their big mammals, such as the lions and buffalos that draw millions of tourists each year, to rampant hunting and farming since 1970. The continent-wide study by specialists, including from the London Zoological Society and UN environment programme (UNEP), late on Monday found big mammal populations inside national parks declined 59 per cent between 1970 and 2005.
However, Elephants and rhinos were not included in the study because of special trade restrictions relating to them.
I think that these african game parks should be more responsible on the care of these animals. They should try to gather back these animals, as hunters may be around to hunt them down, resulting in extinction.

Want to buy a lion, or bear?
Sabah Alazawi is doing a roaring trade these days at his Baghdad pet shop - and not only because he has a lion for sale.
Along with dogs, he also offers bears, wolves, monkeys and vultures. While hundreds of people visit his menagerie daily, most are there because it offers a free alternative to an outing to the zoo, rather than to buy. Wolves, peacocks, two young alligators, an ostrich, a badger and a porcupine are also in residence, and the next arrivals - a pair of hyenas and two more baby lions - are expected soon.
I think that this is a very interesting article because I do not think that another "pet store" like this can be found anywhere around the world. It is very unique because it has animals that are classified as deadly ones such as the wolves and bears.

Cairo building collapses, 7 dead
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/World/Story/STIStory_553373.html
Seven people were killed when a residential building collapsed on Wednesday in the historic Islamic quarter of Cairo, Egypt. Rescue workers pulled seven corpses from the rubble in the Darb el-Ahmar area. An eighth person was rescued, suffering from moderate to severe fractures. Prosecutors were informed to carry out the investigation immediately. Building collapses are common in Egypt because of lax building standards and poor maintenance.
I think that these buildings should be modified immediately so that the Egyptians can be ensured of their safety and well-being. This is because the buildings are extremely dangerous and is almost an equivalent to a time-bomb if the incident is not handled properly.

Briton gored in groin

A Bull rammed his horns into the groin of a British tourist on Wednesday as 11 people were injured on the last day of the Pamplona festival in northern Spain, the regional government said.
The 24-year-old man from Yarm in north-eastern England was in a 'serious' condition in hospital during the eighth and final bull run of the festival.
He was one of four people who were struck by the horns of a bull while the rest were hurt in falls as they raced through the narrow cobbled streets of the city pursued by the animals, a government statement said.
I think that this incident can be avoided with careful handling of the festival. Thus, I think that the organizers should be responsible for this Briton man who may have "lost his opportunity of Father's day"

Typhoon cuts Manila power
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/SEAsia/Story/STIStory_553397.html
Parts of Manila may be without power until Friday after Typhoon Conson hit the Philippines main island of Luzon, killing at least 11 people with more than 50 missing, and moved towards southern China.
It would take two to three days to repair at least five major transmission lines after cables and wires were cut on Tuesday night by falling trees, posts and strong winds, said Guillermo Redoblado, spokesman for the national grid corporation. Provinces neighbouring the capital were hit harder by Conson, which weakened to a tropical storm after reaching Luzon but sill carried winds of 95 kmh and gusts of up to 120 kmh.
About 11 people were dead and 40 people were missing. I think that we should help these countries that are super unlucky because they are not only living through poverty, but also living with occasional danger such as natural disasters.

Underage M'sian gambler fined
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_553381.html
An 18 year old Malaysian, Tey Chin Wei, sneaked into the Marina Bay Sands casino on May 2, lost nearly all of his money and ended up stealing the handbag of a woman at the roulette table. He was fined $3,000 by a district court on Wednesday. His father, a farmer, who came down to attend the hearing, paid the fine.
Tey, who works as a hair stylist here, looks younger than his actual age and the court was not told how he managed to enter the casino at 4pm on May 1. Guests must be 21 or older.
In the ensuing 10 hours, he gambled away nearly $800. At about 2am, he noticed Madam Tan Hwee Leng, 38, had placed her handbag behind her on the seat of her chair. She was playing roulette at that time and noticed that her handbag was missing at 2.15am.
I think that this guy's actions are foolish and stupid because he was supposed to come to Singapore for working purposes and not travel here to squander away all his money in the gambling tables at Marina Bay. He should seek help and call the hotline, 1800-6-668-668.

World's fastest growing economy
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_553339.html
Singapore looks set to become the world's fastest-growing economy on Wednesday after the government upgraded its 2010 forecast to a blistering 13 to 15 per cent expansion, economists said.
The new forecast, up sharply from earlier predicted 7-9 per cent growth, outstrips estimates of around 10 per cent growth in regional powerhouse China and came despite lingering worries over the US economy and Europe's debt crisis.
Singapore will also become the top growing economy in Asia and probably the world. I think that it is wonderful news that Singapore is growing and expanding rapidly. However, can the country not increase the prices rapidly too. =)

Germany probes match-fixing
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Sport/Story/STIStory_553406.html
German prosecutors that suspected match-fixing in football say their investigation now covers 270 matches in several countries and more than 250 people. Prosecutors say on Wednesday that investigators so far have allowed suspicions of match-fixing to be 'further substantiated.' They suspect that some euro1.5 million (S$2.6 million) was paid in bribes to referees, players and others and that profits from manipulated bets amounted to euro7.5 million.
I think that syndicates should not take advantage of the World Cup as another source of temporary income. It is because this brings about a bad image towards the renowed tournament.

Cooker turns rice into bread

Japan's consumer electronics maker Sanyo has launched the world's first cooker that can turn rice grains into bread, an innovation that it hopes will be a hit across Asia.
The machine can mill a cup of rice grains into rice flour, then mixes it with water, gluten, yeast and other ingredients to bake a loaf of bread in four hours, Sanyo Electric said.
Wheat-free bread is good for people that are allergic to grain. I think that this technological advancement by Japan should continue as it can help people around the world and also, let people use products that are both innovative and effective.

China renews Google licence
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Asia/Story/STIStory_551529.html
GOOGLE Inc said on Friday that the Chinese authorities had renewed its licence to operate a website, averting a potential shutdown of its flagship search page in the world's biggest Internet market.
Google said last week that it would stop automatically rerouting users to its uncensored Hong Kong-based search page, explaining that Beijing had indicated it would not renew its Internet Content Provider licence if it continued to do so.
That had prompted speculation that China might use the opportunity to shut down Google's China search page, in what would have been a blow to its other business in the country.
I think that Google and China should co-operate together because this can ensure people to get information from China. It is because this country has a huge population and has a very strong market.

Spanish players robbed

SPAIN players Sergio Busquets and Pedro Rodriguez were robbed ahead of their World Cup semi-final win over Germany in Durban. This was discovered after the 1-0 victory against Germany last Wednesday, with Busquets losing some documents and about euro800 (S$1400). Pedro reportedly lost about euro1000 (S$1750) from his safe.
I think that this may highlight the lack of security in South Africa. However, I think that they did a good job in security overall over the span of this World Cup tournament.

Suicides of 2 JC girls
2 Pioneer Junior College classmates died within three weeks of one another by leaping from high-rise blocks of flats about a year ago, a coroner's court heard on Thursday.
Ho Yi Xin, 17, had been seeing a private psychiatrist since June last year as she was feeling anxious in school and at home. She had problems sleeping and could not concentrate on her studies. Her last visit to the psychiatrist was on July 3, the day she committed suicide at Bukit Panjang.
Seventeen days later, her classmate, Wong Peek Yian, leapt to her death from her seventh-floor bedroom window at Jurong West Street 81. Peek Yian had found out that she had done badly in her mid-year examination and dreaded to see her vice-principal over her poor performance.
I think that these 2 girls should have thought about the consequences before committing suicide. Bypassers may have gotten a shock due to their irresponsible actions.

Octopus oracle Paul to retire
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Sport/Story/STIStory_552596.html
Paul, the octopus who became a global sensation by correctly predicting the outcome of as many World Cup matches as he has legs - all seven of Germany's games plus the Spain-Netherlands final, is sadly, going to retire.
The spokeswoman of Sea Life Oberhausen aquarium, Tanja Munzig said that the octopus will ' go into retirement' and go back to doing what he does best: playing with handlers and delight children who visits him.
I think that Paul the octopus should go into retirement as soon as possible because some people from other countries may exterminate him and turn him into sotong ball or takoyaki balls.

2 dead in WCup celebrations
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Sport/Story/STIStory_552621.html
Two people died and over 100 people were injured in Spain in the celebrations that followed the country's first ever World Cup win, local officials said on Monday.
In south-western Spain, a man died on Sunday night after falling from a veranda, said a spokesman for the representative of Spain's central government in Madrid, the capital of Spain.
The other death came from the city of the western province of Extremadura, when a member of a group of people that jumped into a municipal swimming pool to celebrate Spain's win drowned.
I think that even though it is a glorious event to celebrate Spain's win of the World Cup, the celebrations by the fans went overboard, resulting in unnecessary injuries and even deaths. This gives us a reminder to always know that everything done must have a limit, or else the consequences may be dire.

Bravery amidst danger
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_534029.html
Knowing that a man had just stabbed their colleague and could be armed did not stop two Singapore Pools employees from going after him. The two men, security assistant Muhammad Rudino Mohamed, 38, and his colleague, Mr Roswira Abdul Rani, 39, a technician, trailed the man for 20 minutes - all the while on the phone with the cops to keep them updated on his whereabouts.
I think this act of bravery by this two men were commendable, because they were going after the man even though he was armed. Thus, I think that they are very brave and vigilant for their actions.

Jurong Town Council to be first town council using LED lighting
Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1058943/1/.html
Jurong Town Council will be the first town council to start using LED Lighting for its common areas in public housing estates. This measure will change all of its 95,000 fluorescent light tubes in corridors, staircases and void decks. The LED Lighting installation will consume less electrical power and it will also save the town council 1.1 million annually.
I believe that this LED Lighting project can also help the environment because lesser electrical consumption will mean lesser air pollution due to fuels being burned to create electricity. I think that we should reduce the amount of electricity usage in order to play our part to save the environment.

15 killed in Indian cyclone
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Asia/Story/STIStory_529101.html
The Cyclone Laila slammed into the South Indian Coast on Thursday, causing heavy rains and winds of up to 90 kilometres per hour. It also uprooted trees and electric lines which caused disruption and damage in the South Indian coast. The heavy rains and winds killed at least 15 people over the past 24 hours and at least 55 fishermen were reported missing. More than 50,000 people were moved from the coastal and low-lying villages to the temporary shelters and government buildings.
I think that we are very lucky because Singapore does not have any natural disasters that are similar to India. Also, this can show us that we must treasure life as much as possible, because unexpected things in life like natural disasters can happen any time which can take life away.

Man invades baseball outfield
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/World/Story/STIStory_529285.html
Authorities say a homeless man who said he was looking for the fastest route to a concession stand was arrested because he was walking on the outfield in the midst of a minor league baseball match in Pennsylvania. His action made him get charges on criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. It was seen by the police that he was lowering himself to the fence and into the field and the ninth inning during an Altoona Curve game against the Akron Aeros.
I think the actions of this homeless man is very foolish because he did actions that are very gullible which caused him to get criminal charges that most probably led him to jail. Also, this can create harm for the public as he may not what he's doing and thus, lose his senses which can result to himself doing something that may harm other people, even though with no intention.

Bribery a solution in Russia?
About 55% of the Russians in a 1600-man poll taken from a Levada Centre shows that the Russians thinks that bribing officials is a best way to solve problems. Even though the Russian president has pledged to build a law-abiding Russia, the findings from Levada Centre shows that Russians still pay bribes to obtain medical services, get driving licences etc.
This article has shown me that Corruption amongst the government with the people will make the country a total mess, for example people seeking important medical services will be deprived of it etc. Thus, I feel that we should all be thankful that Singapore is a country that is lawful and we should do our part to be a law-abiding citizen.

Beijing Schools beef up security

More than 2,000 security guards dressed in riot gear were sent to some Beijing schools on Wednesday, but thousands more were needed to patrol the capital's schools alone. Throughout the nation, similar scenes were occuring nationwide.
I think that this action made by the government can ensure the safety and also see that the children can have education in a safe environment, despite the rioting and troubles of the outside happening in the whole of China.

Tear gas used on protesters
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/World/Story/STIStory_522961.
Protesters tried to storm into the Greece's parliament house and hurled paving stones to the police, who responded with tear gas bombs. This is due to the government's action on the harsh spending cuts to save Greece from bankruptcy. There were riots everywhere in the Greek Capital, with chants of 'thieves' being called by the demonstraters.
I think that this riot occurs due to lack of communication between the Greek Government and the people of Greece. The people rioted because they do not understand the actions of the government. However, it is because the Government did not explain fully to the people, thus leading to misunderstandings between the people and the Government, which led to the riots in Greece.

NY car bomb suspect nabbed
A man that is identified as a US citizen of Pakistani origin has been nabbed because he is suspected to be in connection with an attempted car bombing at NY's Times Square.
Shazad Faisal, a Pakistani-American, was said to be arrested at Long Island, New York. It has been said that the 30-year-old man was linked to the SUV seized with explosives on 1 May.
I think that this action is irresponsible and foolish because this not only create damage to the streets of New York but also can cause many lives to be lost. This article taught me to be alert at all times, because even simple and common things seen everyday like cars can cause a lot of harm because explosives found in vehicles can create massive destruction.

Make Public Hospital Bills
The Health Ministry will compel private hospitals to make hospital bills in private hospitals public so that they can make Medisave claims for their patients. This can allow patients to compare between the public and private hospitals. The private sectors of the hospitals bill the patients in a complicated manner, thus this measure to make hospital bills is done.
I think that this measure can allow Singaporeans to have more alternatives for choosing healthcare. Also, families with lower financial income can get better healthcare without having to worry for medical expenses because Medisave can cover the medical bills. Also, some people that use healthcare in private hospitals may not know how the bill is charged. Therefore, if the change is implemented, all the citizens will get to benefit for it allows us to know more about public hospital bills.

Singapore envoy to visit Romonia next month
Singapore's ambassador Anil Kumar Nayar, who is based in Brussels, has been appointed as a special envoy to Romania, and will visit the country next month with lawyers in order to help the local officials against the former diplomat Silviu Ionescu. I think that Mr. Ionescu is irresponsible and does not respect Singapore's laws. This is because he escaped from Singapore and did not come back after hitting 3 pedastrians in Dec 15. I think he should be prosecuted as soon as he comes back to Singapore.

Tiny Himalayan kingdom tackles a new summit
Even though hosting seven foreign dignitaries in Singapore is a small event, a country seemingly unknown like Bhutan treats this as a very big event. This is because the country has never hosted any of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) leadership meetings in the regional bloc's 25-year history. Thus, they want to make a good impression to the foreign dignitaries. I think that doing this high-scale event can make the country get more exposure to the world. As Bhutan has been increasing rapidly for the past two years, this event can surely increase the rate of this country further improving its economy.
